HISTORY OF
THE LIVERPOOL ARMS
The Public House in
England, Wales and the Isle of Man have for centuries been unique
institutions. All with different rules. Twenty years ago in England
you
could not get a drink between 2.00 p.m and 7.00 p.m on a Sunday. In
Wales,
life depended on whether you lived in the North or the South. Rules
changed
from County to County.
On the Isle of Man, the English tradition of the Christmas Day
family get together
in a Pub was unheard of. Until a couple of years
ago, all Pubs were shut on the 25th December
Nowhere else in the world has the importance of these institutions
played such an important part in the life of their communities. In
Ireland some may disagree! In Scotland, the culture is somewhat
different.
The Liverpool Arms started life as a Coaching House and was known as
the 'Halfway House', a term commonly used for watering holes between
mid-distance between two communities. In our case, we are situated
between Douglas and Laxey.
With the advent of the car, The LA prospered as a Country Pub. The
houses next door to the Pub were built as Show houses for a proposed
development. but the estate was never built. The introduction of
Drink Driving laws in the early 1970's had a huge effect on the
business and food was suddenly all important. among the most
successful of the Landlords around this time were the Pemberton
family. Clive and his wife built a fine reputation and the Pub
thrived.
However, after
their departure The LA hit troubled times, as did many of the
Islands Country Pubs. Indeed, many have now closed. But in the late
1990's Danny and Graham happened. Graham was employed by Heron and
Brearley to rescue the place. It was in line to be sold as the
owners could see no future for it. But with hard work and lots of
Karaoke The Liverpool arms came back to life.
In 2000, Danny and Graham decided to move on the bigger things and
the
Dobson's arrived. Shortly thereafter the Brewery decided to sell
the business and put it out to Tenancy. Nigel and Marilyn took the
plunge and bought the business.
The LA is now one
of the most successful pubs on the Island offering an extensive home
prepared menu, weekend entertainment as well as the usual 'locals'
pub offerings - Pool Teams, Dart Teams etc.
So the future looks
bright as this former Coaching house looks forward to many more
chapters in its eventful history.
